1 Week – Introduction to Full Scribe, Saddle Notch Log Building Course $900
Full scribe saddle notch construction has become one of the most popular styles of modern, handcrafted log building. Also known as chinkless, round log construction, the saddle notch is an important innovation in the history of log building; it allows the buildings’ corner notches to remain tight as the logs dry and shrink in size over time.
In this shorter introductory course at the the BC School of Log Building, we will focus the majority of our time on the cornerstone of full scribe log building: the saddle notch. We have developed a process where we simulate the different steps of the log cabin shell building process through the construction of a log picnic table to be able to create a completed project in a one week time period. Students have the option to purchase the log picnic tables that they work on.
Course Content
This course will cover the following through a hands-on approach, while working on a log picnic table:
- Tools of the trade talk
- Safe log building techniques
- Chainsaw skills development for the log builder
- What makes a good building log
- Log selection
- Log scribing (using the over scribing technique)
- Cutting saddles
- Notching and cutting the belly groove
- Laying out and preparing the first round
- Leveling the top round
